Anita joined fellow Parliamentarians to support Irwin Cotler & the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights Advocacy Project for Political Prisoners.
It is vitally important as Members of Parliament that when we see elected Members of Parliament, human rights defenders, and non-violent activists from around the world targeted specifically because of their advocacy and defence of Human Rights, that parliamentarians in countries such as ours stand up and speak out. Silence is often a license for these perpetrators to do more.
Anita brought specific attention to the cause of Leila de Lima, a current Senator and former Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights in the Philippines. Leila de Lima has been imprisoned since February 2016 for speaking out on the abuses and extrajudicial killings that are happening in the Philippines. She has been imprisoned solely because she is a human rights defender.
